In a bold move to enhance the quality of public education in Andhra Pradesh, IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at revitalizing schools across the state. Speaking on Tuesday in Vijayawada, Lokesh outlined the government's commitment to elevating public schools to a minimum three-to-four-star quality rating, a significant upgrade from their current status.
Revocation of Controversial Government Order
Minister Lokesh criticized the previous administration for Government Order 117, which he claimed marginalized underprivileged students by driving them away from government schools. This policy, implemented between 2019 and 2024, resulted in a troubling trend of school closures, with 233 institutions shutting down as a consequence. After revoking this order, Lokesh emphasized the current government's resolve to honor its electoral pledge to restore equity in education. He declared, "The new government will work to regain the trust of families who have lost faith in public schools due to past policies."
Expansion of the 'One Class - One Teacher' Initiative
In a bid to enhance educational outcomes, Lokesh announced plans to expand the 'One Class - One Teacher' policy. Previously, only about 3% of schools were utilizing this system, which aims to provide dedicated instruction for each class. The government now intends to extend this model to approximately 33% of schools throughout Andhra Pradesh. This initiative is expected to significantly improve learning standards, thereby boosting examination results for students.
Infrastructure Improvements for Enhanced Learning Environments
Infrastructure development is at the forefront of Lokesh's plan. He highlighted the need for leak-proof buildings, adequate painting, and the construction of play courts. Additionally, essential facilities such as benches, toilets, and safe drinking water are set to be prioritized. The overarching goal is to elevate all public schools to a minimum three-to-four-star quality standard. "We want our students to learn in safe and conducive environments," Lokesh stated, emphasizing the importance of a well-maintained school infrastructure.
Substantial Funding for Educational Revamp
Addressing the financial aspects of this ambitious plan, Lokesh revealed that ā¹200 crore is currently available in the School Management Committee accounts. Furthermore, an additional ā¹800 crore has been earmarked in the upcoming budget, bringing the total planned expenditure for government schools next year to approximately ā¹1,000 crore. This funding will be directed towards completing pending infrastructure works and constructing new classrooms where necessary. "We are committed to ensuring that no school is left behind in our efforts," he assured the Assembly.
Despite these positive developments, Lokesh noted a troubling statistic: no government schools in Andhra Pradesh currently hold a five-star rating. As part of the new initiative, the government aims to rectify this by striving for three- and four-star ratings across the board. He reiterated that the responsibility for completing outstanding works rests squarely with the government, and measures will be taken to settle pending bills related to projects undertaken between 2014 and 2019. This commitment to accountability is expected to foster a more reliable educational landscape.
Looking ahead, the Andhra Pradesh government is set to implement significant changes aimed at uplifting the standards of public education. The ambitious plans laid out by Minister Lokesh signal a renewed focus on quality, accessibility, and infrastructure in schools across the state. As these initiatives unfold, many families are hopeful that these efforts will restore their confidence in the public education system, ensuring that all children have access to a quality learning environment.
